Discovering Grandfather Frost; A Collector's Story
On Tuesday, November 19, collector Kim Balaschak, will give a presentation on the evolution and development of Ded Moroz, or Grandfather Frost, the Russian counterpart to our beloved Santa Claus. Ded Moroz’s history is rich and long, drawing from many sources from the Spirit of Winter, to Bishop Nicholas in 3rd century Greece, through a Christian transformation to his modern-day incarnation established in Soviet times. In this historical journey, you will also meet, among others, Morozko, Mr. Nikto, Snegurichka and Baba Yega, each of whom plays a role in the endearing Ded Moroz story.
Ms. Balaschak will also share her own stories about collecting these holiday treasures in Moscow, where she lived from 1995 through 2008. Particularly special is the ‘prikaz’ or mandate she received from the Russian Ministry of Culture when it granted her permission to take her famous collection out of Russia.
Lecture begins at 6:30 PM
Doors will open at 6:00 PM
