This class is ideal for the beginner with no previous knowledge of HTML. Students attending this beginner course will walk away with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of web design and development using Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). Attendees will learn using clear, easy-to-follow instructions, have access to a password-protected student workroom area and walk away with the very basics of HTML programming.


First Saturday:

Introduction to Designing & Developing with HTML 4

  • What is HTML?
  • Browser Wars
  • Standards
  • Future of HTML


HTML Building Blocks

  • HTML “Grammar,” Tags & Syntax
  • Nesting Tags
  • Special Symbols
  • File Names


HTML Building Blocks

  • Planning your site
  • Organizing your files
  • Web page structure
  • Saving your web page/files


HTML Text Formatting

  • Working with paragraphs
  • Fonts, text and colors
  • Superscripts & subscripts
  • Blockquotes & line breaks


Course Level & Prerequisites

Beginners (previous experience: proficiency with word processing, basic knowledge of the Internet and web browsing. Familiarity with Microsoft and/or Apple operating system also required.)

 

Second Saturday:

Working with Lists

  • Unordered lists
  • Ordered lists
  • Definition lists
  • Nested lists


Creating Links

  • Absolute vs. relative links    
  • Anchor links
  • Linking to specific windows
  • Class Discussion: The artistry of linking


STUDENT ASSIGNMENT

Working with Web Images

  • Using background images
  • Inserting images on a web page
  • Anchor and title text
  • Aligning images
  • Adding space around an image
  • Wrapping text around images
  • Linking images
  • Class Discussion: All About Web Images (transparencies, resolutions, animated GIFs, PNG files, Browser Safe colors)

Working with Lists

  • Class Discussion: Mapping out page layout(s) using tables


Working with Frames

  • Creating a simple frameset
  • Creating frames in columns
  • Creating frames in rows and columns
  • Hiding or showing scrollbars
  • Frame borders and colors
  • Targeting links in particular frames
  • Nesting framesets

STUDENT ASSIGNMENT

Working with forms (front end only)

  • Form elements (text boxes, radio buttons, checkboxes and more)
  • Submit buttons (default & image)
  • Resetting forms
  • Class Discussion: Online forms best practices

All workshops, classes and courses are conveniently held at our Herndon, Virginia training room(s).
