A Presentation of Intercultural Collaborative Work by CalArts and Chung Ang University
INSTITUTE / THEATER / FILM/VIDEO / DANCE / MUSIC: CalArts will host theater students and faculty from Chung-Ang University in Seoul, Korea for an exciting intercultural residency from January 20-30. Six Chung Ang actors will present their 75-minute contemporary adaptation of Lear on January 22 (4pm dress rehearsal - by invitation only, 8pm show). In addition to the 6 actors, there will be 3 faculty and 6 members of the production team as well: director, playwright, stage manager, scenic designer, lighting designer and sound operator/asst director.
As a part of the 2nd week of Interim, CalArts students will have a chance to engage with the Chung-Ang students in a theatrical experiment. The idea for this intercultural collaboration will be to spring off of the Korean Lear and adding layers of language (English and Spanish) as well as animation, movement, video and sound. This Los Angeles aspect of the work is tentatively titledLear/Layer and will involve students from the Schools of Theater, Film/Video (Animation Program), Dance and Music.
From January 24-28, students from
both universities will generate material together towards a performance and
design experiment, with a presentation on Friday, January 28 at 8pm. All
presentations and generation will happen in E-407.
