Speaker: Jamie Coughlin, Director of New Venture Incubator Programs at Dartmouth College

Customer development begins with creating a clear roadmap to discover who your customers are and validating that those people are willing to buy into a product that meets their needs. You can then use that knowledge to create a solid product or service demand and build the infrastructure, relationships, services and processes necessary to grow into a world class company.

This seminar will help entrepreneurs understand and implement the key principles of customer development in their business.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to develop your value proposition
  • Why it's important to know your product-market fit
  • How to create a hypotheses for customer discovery
  • The best ways to segment your target customers
  • Why customer interviews are crucial, and how to ask the right questions

  • Anyone thinking about starting a company
  • Anyone currently in the throes of launching their startup or a new product and needs guidance when it comes to identifying their core customer
  • Students, faculty, and staff
  • Seasoned business leaders who would like to meet the next generation of business leaders

The seminar will be followed by beer and networking from 5:00 - 7:00pm in the same room. Attendees must be 21+ to partake.

About Our Presenter:

Jamie Coughlin is currently the Director of New Venture Incubator Programs at Dartmouth College, where he will help oversee the growth of new venture creation and incubation in pursuit of a holistic entrepreneurial ecosystem. Previously, Jamie was the CEO and Entrepreneur in Residence of the abi Innovation Hub, NH’s oldest business incubator, where he led the successful turn-around and rebranding of this 15 year old organization into NH’s most active incubator and innovation center. In addition, Jamie serves as the President of the NH Business Incubator Network and is a Board member of the NH High Technology Council. Jamie has also founded and managed a variety of disruptive businesses. Jamie received his BA from Princeton University.

Jamie was recently awarded NHBR’s 2012 “Business Excellence” Award as NH’s most innovative non-profit leader, as well as recognized as a 2013 NH Union Leader’s “40 Under Forty” recipient.


Innovation Catalyst Seminars are held at the NH Innovation Commercialization Center at 9 Madbury Road (4th floor) located at the corner of Madbury Road and Pettee Brook Lane in Durham.

Attendees may park along Madbury Road, Pettee Brook Lane, and Main Street for $1/hour. Parking rules are enforced until 6pm.

The Innovation Catalyst Seminar Series, hosted monthly during the academic year, discusses relevant issues related to commercializing UNH’s innovations, including current and emerging best practices on campus.
