Bone Marrow Drive:

This Drive was put together to help us register people for the Bone marrow registry operated by NMDP. It was organized by the family and friends of Luis Danvers. He may need a bone marrow donor to save their life. It is important to start adding people to the registry so that they we would have the opportunity to find a match if need be. Also, there are so many other children like Luis that die every year because they were unable to find a match. My name is Sharon and I am determined to help my son, as well as those children that are in need. Please help me in registering as many people to the registry as possible. Invite family, friends, coworkers, and others.

Willing participants should be between the ages of 18-61 and in overall good health to be swabbed. Once swabbed, you will be on the list for anyone in need of your marrow type until the age of 61. For information on bone marrow donations in general log on to DKMS

Currently minority donors represent a small population on the donor list. Hispanic or Latino represent 9% of the total population. Followed by African-Americans or Black with 8% , Asian, 7%, Multiple Race, 3%, Native American or Alaskan Native, 1%. Caucasian donors represent more than 80% of the total population.

Why YOU are so important as a bone marrow donor?
• Every 10 minutes blood cancer takes a life.
• Leukemia is the most common disease children and young adults
in the U.S die of, and a bone marrow transplant may be their only chance for survival.
• Only 4 out of every 10 patients will receive the transplant that could save their lives.

What is my commitment if I register?
• Will also be listed on the Be The Match Registry® (operated by the NMDP) until your 61st birthday, unless you ask to be removed.
• Will consider donating to any searching patient who needs a bone marrow transplant.

How do I become a bone marrow donor?
• You need to be between the ages of 18 and 55 years old and meet the eligibility requirements and understand your commitment.
• You need to complete a registration form.
• You need to swab your cheeks using a cotton-tipped swab to collect cheek cells which will identify your HLA tissue-type.

The Luis Danvers Leukemia Fund was organized to promote, educate, and spread awareness about leukemia, Luis's fight against leukemia, the fight of other patients and their families, and becoming a bone marrow donor, donating cord blood, and blood donations.  It was started in honor of Luis Danvers who at 4 years old who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in September of 2009. This organization will help Luis while he is battling this disease. It will also help serve as a catalyst to help find a way to cure as many people as we can suffering from a blood cancer.
