The Las Vegas Backcountry Trail Races take place in the Rainbow Gardens ACEC (Area of Critical Environmental Concern).
Rainbow Gardens ACEC contains a scenic mountain and canyon landscape similar to those found in more remote locations of southern Nevada, but unique in its close proximity to the city, allowing people a wilderness experience close to home.
Located on the east side of the Las Vegas Valley next to the Sunrise Mountain Township, Rainbow Gardens is managed to protect the geologic, scientific, scenic, and cultural resources and sensitive plants. It contains the Great Unconformity, a location where there are missing intervals of the geologic record. In this case, a surface of rock was exposed and then covered with a much younger layer of rock so there is approximately 1.2 billion years of geologic time missing in the local geologic record.
Rainbow Gardens ACEC contains deposits of gypsum and sandy soils that support sensitive plant species including the Las Vegas bearpoppy. I've even seen a stunning Desert Horned Owl in this gorgeous color country area! These soils are very fragile when disturbed, and the cyptobiotic surface is easily damaged. The ACEC protects a portion of this habitat by designating specific routes of previously disturbed lands to explore the area.
The Las Vegas Backcountry Trail Races utilize some of these designated routes bringing you a sensational wilderness experience just footsteps from Las Vegas!
Join us for this stunning trail race at Rainbow Gardens ACEC- wilderness close to the action in Las Vegas!

When & Where
Calico Racing, LLC
Since Calico Racing's inception in 2007 it has been an honor to showcase the exquisite natural side of Las Vegas. With 8- 10 races annually Calico Racing offers unique running events throughout the valley that work in harmony with nature, challenge you in creative ways, and offer a personal touch not possible in mass production races.
Integrity, innovation, attention to detail, community, and environmental stewardship are the driving forces behind Calico Racing. A resident of Southern Nevada since 2001, I am a true desert rat, and am most at home among the canyons. My inspiration and creativity thrive when I am out on a run. In fact, Calico Racing was conceptualized on a run at Red Rock Canyon, whose trail-heads “Calico Hills” dictated the namesake and logo colors for Calico Racing.
Welcoming of athletes of all distances and abilities, I invite you to join us at a Calico Racing event, and let me share with you my Las Vegas, Nevada.
