When & Where
Captain Mark McDowell Memorial Foundation
The Captain Mark McDowell Memorial Foundation was established in 2009 after our dear friend, USAF Captain Mark McDowell, was killed during a flight mission in Afghanistan on July 18, 2009. Mark is a North Carolina native, born in Charlotte, NC in 1983. He was educated in the Mecklenburg and Iredell County school systems where he graduated from South Iredell High School in Statesville, NC in 2001. He was an outstanding young man, gifted in both academics and sports. His academic achievements were numerous including being a Governor’s School attendee, Morehead Scholar nominee, Duke Power Scholarship winner and highest SAT in his high school graduating class. It is without a doubt that he was voted “Best All Around” by his senior class. Upon graduating, Mark chose to accept his appointment to the United States Air Force Academy where he majored in Physics. He was selected to attend pilot training at Shepard Air Force Base and then assigned to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base to continue his training on F-15E Strike Eagles. Mark was such a charismatic and giving person … the type of person that inspired you to want to do greater things. Throughout his life he was always involved in giving back to his community from tutoring while in school, to leading youth groups at church, to volunteering at the Bagram Air Force Base hospital where he was deployed in Afghanistan. We want to be able to continue his generous spirit and act of paying it forward through this foundation. It is our hope with the donations to establish a yearly scholarship at South Iredell High School in addition to assisting other local public schools with needed funds and hopefully one day contribute to a new medical facility or other public building in Iredell or Mecklenburg County.
"Greater love hath no man than this, that one lay down his life for his friends." - John 15:13
