The West African Drum Ensemble was founded in Fall 2001 as part of the Department of Music at ULV.  Students taking this course learn traditional West African rhythms and the cultural context in which they are played.

Tonight’s performance is a celebration of traditional rhythms that originate mostly from the Malinké people from what once was the Mali Empire in West Africa.  Some of the present day countries that comprise that region are Mali, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Gambia and Senegal. The origins of this music date back as far as the 12th century. The instruments used can be separated into two categories: the djembé and dunun. The dunun are comprised of three separate voices called kenkeni, sangban, and dununba).
