Event Details

La Peña celebrates its 38th Anniversary this June! What better way to celebrate than to showcase our community of students, young and old, learning and participating in arts, music, dance, and cultural education. Join us in our 38th Year Class Recitals!

All proceeds will benefit La Peña.

La Peña's free and low cost classes give hundreds of youth and adult students access to training by highly regarded art professionals teaching an array of art forms. This year’s recitals include:

Afro-Peruvian Adult Dance Class & Huaranguito (Afro-Peruvian Youth Music & Dance Ensemble)

Instructed by Gabriela Shiroma (Director of De Rompe y Raja Cultural Association), students learn to dance a varied repertoire of traditional dances from the coastal region of Peru such as festejos, landos, and zamacuecas. Huaranguito trains children from age 7-12 years old in the Afro-Peruvian traditions at a crucial period of their personal development and transitions. It is important that at this time of their lives, the children have the opportunity to learn their heritage, cultural practice and traditions for our community to ensure that the future generations continue our cultural legacies.

Vocals for Kids

Let’s sing! With the help of instructor Gail Dobson students will work on how to sing, learn to breathe properly, learn how to sing in a microphone, and get over their fear of performing – yes, it can be scary!

Rockin' Kids Trio

Instructed by Stephanie Pepitone, the Rockin’ Kids Sing Along class meets year round. This class is a musical playgroup for kids of all ages. Stephanie Pepitone is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and former punk rock singer/guitarist. Stephanie plays acoustic guitar and leads families in about an hour’s worth of singing, dancing, music making and fun/chaos. The class features original children’s music and some of your old time favorites. She will be performing with her trio.

Adult & Youth Bomba

Instructed by Shefali Shah & Hector Lugo, students learn bomba dance, rhythms, and songs, accompanied by live drummers. The Youth class also teaches drumbeats along with Bomba history and its significance and place in Puerto Rican and Afro-Caribbean culture.

Puerto-Rican Music Ensemble

Instructed by Hector Lugo, this workshop is designed for all instrumentalists and vocalists interested in studying folkloric and popular Puerto Rican music. This class covers a variety of genres such as plena, aguinaldo, seis, guaracha jibara, and bomba popular, focusing on the dominant musical and lyrical structures, as well as the central rhythmic and melodic patterns, variations, and approaches to improvisation within each of these genres.
