Event Details

LA Hacks is setting a new bar for just how epic a hackathon can be. This April 11-13, hackers and builders from across the nation will come together at UCLA, fill the iconic Pauley Pavilion up to capacity, and experience.

Experience what, exactly? You'll experience the biggest hackathon that you'll have ever been a part of. You'll experience an environment with enough mentorship and resources to learn anything you can dream of, no matter what your skill level is. You'll meet and interact with some of the biggest names in tech, as well as some tech-enthused celebrities. And most of all, you'll experience first-hand just how incredible our country's collegiate hackathon community really is.

Check out http://www.lahacks.com for more information, including what awesome companies we have lined up to sponsor and be present at LA Hacks.

When is LA Hacks, and how long does it last?

LA Hacks is taking place April 11-13, starting at approximately 5pm on Friday, and ending at around 5pm on Sunday. The actual hacking period is ~36 hours, from Friday evening to Sunday morning.

What is a Hackathon?

LA Hacks is a student competition to build the most exciting technology products within 36 hours. Products are then judged by professionals in the tech industry. Check out this blog post by hackathon guru Dave Fontenot to learn more.

Who can attend?

LA Hacks focuses primarily on undergraduate and graduate students but accepts high school students and recent grads (1-2 years out) on a case-by-case basis. Dropouts who would otherwise currently be in college are cool too.

How much does it cost to attend?

Admission is free for hackers, NO “STRINGS” ATTACHED! (You’ll get that on the bus ride over) That includes food and drinks for the duration of the hackathon including transportation for those taking LA Hacks sponsored buses. Buses will pick up from a designated spot at each school and perform drop off at the end of the event. We will be reimbursing each chosen applicants flying in from out-of-state for up to $200 per person.

How do I know if I can take a bus?

If you have registered for LA Hacks, you will be able to sign up for a seat on a bus, even if you don't go to the school for which the bus is primarily intended. Sign up now: http://bit.ly/lahacksbus!

What can my team build?

You can build whatever you want: websites, apps, or hardware (no soldering allowed). All code must be written during the hackathon - feel free to use open source libraries and APIs. Hacks are judged on creativity, technical difficulty, usefulness, and overall awesomeness.

How big are teams?

Teams should be at most 4 people total. You can compete alone, but that’s a lot less fun. We'll have a site up to help find teams before the event, and you'll have time at the start to meet others to join teams.

Are we allowed to build on past projects or code?

No. All hacks must begin at the event with no prior code written. Using third-party APIs and libraries is definitely okay, as long as they're accessible by everyone else as well. Our judges are experts, they know what’s possible in 36 hours.

What should I bring?

All attendees are required to bring their valid student ID for admission (name must match Eventbrite registration) and a laptop for hacking (which includes charger and all). If you want to do a hardware hack, don't forget to bring the devices you plan on working with. Additionally, bring sleeping bags (if you can’t hang) and toiletry materials.

How do I officially register?

Sign up on this Eventbrite page. Right now. Do it. Why are you still reading this?
