L.A. Founding Families

Conceived and originally staged by Marissa Chibas

Directed by Nataki Garrett

L.A. Founding Families brings the cultural history of Los Angeles to life, with 28 actors portraying historical figures of the city’s Mexican, European, African, Chinese and Native American origins.

Unlike a traditional night of historic theater, the audience will move from room to room, watching exhibits come alive to tell five stories:  “The Pobladores”, the original 22 families to migrate to Los Angeles from Mexico; “Gold Mountain”, a chilling examination of the Chinese Massacre of 1871; “The Tongva”, the Native peoples of the Los Angeles region; “The Tavern”, a “meet and greet” with the cast of important characters to have their hands in the building of historic L.A., including Pio Pico, California’s last Mexican governor; and finally, an exhibit where “We Look Back”, examining how these diverse cultural origins affect us today.
