The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, in conjunction with the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice, is pleased to present Hawaii's premier annual School Choice event.
Demonstrating that School Choice is not a partisan issue, Oklahoma legislators Sen. Jabar Shumate (D) and Rep. Jason Nelson (R) have teamed up to tell the story of how Oklahoma's public schools have transitioned from a ranking of low School Choice to become a national model of educational progress. School Choice refers to the extent to which parents and students may choose educational options appropriate for each learner. School Choice options exist both within the public school system and beyond and include: public charter schools, science and arts academies, distance-learning, partnerships such as with Teach for America, private schooling, homeschooling, and more.
|Sen. Jabar Shumate was elected in November 2012 to serve the people of Oklahoma's Senate District 11. Prior to his election to the state senate, Shumate served four terms in the Oklahoma House of Representatives. Senator Shumate has a passion for improving education. He has been an advocate for kids trapped in low performing schools and fought for increased funding for public education. He also serves on the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence Board of Directors and represents Oklahoma on the legislative advisory committee for the Southern Regional Education Board.||Rep. Jason Nelson was first elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives November 4, 2008 and was re-elected in 2010 and 2012. Jason is a leader in the areas of education and human services reform. In 2010, Jason authored and lead the bipartisan effort to pass House Bill 3393, which created the Lindsey Nicole Henry Scholarships for Students with Disabilities Program Act. This school choice law allows special-needs students to use a portion of the state money set aside for their education to a qualified private school of their choice. This law is the first of its kind passed in Oklahoma.|
