Kombucha & Ginger Beer: Introduction to Fermentation Workshop & Tasting
Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM (EDT)
Somerville, United States
In this class you'll learn how to make your own kombucha and ginger beer, as well as the basics of fermentation and how to care for live cultures. Kombucha is a tea that is fermented with a colony of bacteria and yeast (the same kind as in just about any fermented foods or drinks). It produces a tangy self-carbonating beverage that is both delicious and packed full of B vitamins and amino acids. Producing ginger beer uses the same process, and even the same colony, but you'll be able to create your own variety of ginger beer with a custom level of ginger bite and spice!
Join us for a brief talk about kombucha and the basics of fermentation of drinks and foods, a tasting of a variety of kombucha blends and ginger beers, and a demonstration about preparing the teas for inoculation. Everyone will leave with a starter pack that includes a kombucha mother, and enough tea and sugar for your first batch.
Learning the basics of dealing with live cultures (keeping things clean, feeding, etc). How to prepare tea for fermentation, and how to harvest your kombucha or ginger beer.
All the components of your kombucha starter kit will be provided, and are covered by the cost of registration.
Jimmie Rodgers is a maker, artist, electronics engineer, instructor, and world traveler. He has been brewing his own beer and kombucha since 2007, making hundreds of batches of a number of different varieties.
Saturday, August 17, 5:30-8:30pm.
