Know Your Farmer Know Your Food Growers and Education Resource Fund
Slow Food Detroit's Know Your Farmer Know Your Food Growers and Educaiton Resource Fund has been created to help our local area rural, urban and community farmers meet their needs. This fund is also for local and sustainable food education. Your tax deductible contribution will help Slow Food Detroit in its mission to promote and support good health, good food and a clean planet by helping our farmers in Michigan when they need it and educate the community about the importance of supporting our local and sustainable food sheds. Thank you for your contribution.
Slow Food Detroit
The Slow Food movement was founded in Italy in 1989 as an alternative to the fast food lifestyle. Now there are chapters all over the world. As a local Chapter, Slow Food Detroit is committed to creating dramatic and lasting change in our food system while protecting our planet.
Our commitment to families in the Detroit area stems from our belief in the right for all people to have access to fresh, sustainable and locally produced food and that the producers of our food should be treated with dignity and justly compensated for their labor. Our mission focuses upon strengthening awareness of the connection between the food on our plates and the health of our planet. We are an all volunteer Board and a member driven organization. Our members are involved in activities such as:
- Raising public awareness, improving access and encouraging the enjoyment of foods that are local, seasonal and sustainably grown
- Caring for the land and protecting biodiversity in Detroit and Metro Detroit communities today, as well as for future generations
- Creating educational outreach programs within the Detroit and Metro Detroit community educating school children about regional cooking and our rich cultural heritages
- Advocating for farmers and artisans who grow, produce, market, prepare and serve wholesome food
We celebrate our local food traditions and heritages through events such as rural and urban farm tours, wine tastings, brewery and wine dinners, farm to school programs, and nutrition education throughout schools in the Detroit area.
