Kitchen Skills Series October 2013
Do you dream of cooking like a professional and preparing culinary creations? This cooking series is designed for you! We want to show you how to feed yourself and your family freshly cooked meals by learning the correct skills and techniques to master your own kitchen.
In this series you’ll feel like you’re in culinary school as you learn sophisticated knife skills and essential cooking techniques, from braising to glazing with our lead chef instructor, Eric Gephart. By the end of the course, you’ll have a firm grasp of ingredients, equipment and how to cook instinctively!
Kitchen 101 - October 29
Introduction to Kitchen Basics (3hours)
Mise En Place “Place Everything in its Place.”
Kitchen 101 has been developed to teach you the basic skills you need to master the kitchen. During this session, you will learn the importance of: knife skills and care; sanitation and food storage; and starch and vegetable preparation.
Your chef instructor will go over these topics while showing you techniques of the trade to help you develop your skills to become a master in your own kitchen!
Kitchen 102 - November 5
Cooking Methods (3hours)
Basic cooking methods are essential for any cook.
In this hands-on course, you will be exposed to five cooking methods that chefs have used for the past century. This class will build upon the Kitchen Basic and focus on preparing meals using various cooking techniques such as: roasting, braising, sautéing and pan frying, steaming, poaching and grilling. You will learn how to prepare dishes utilizing these fundamental techniques and discuss how one ingredient can be used in more than one recipe.
Kitchen 103 -November 12
Grand Finale (3hours)
Interpret a recipe to work with your taste.
Cooking is not just about recipes; it is about how to take ingredients and make them taste good! Recipes are great road maps to show us how someone else got there, but one of the joys of cooking is to find your own paths. In the final class of the series you will discuss how to build a successful pantry; make substitution in your recipe; and nutrition in a meal, while bringing everything you learned together from all three classes to prepare a meal for the class. Participants will also receive a complimentary Ticket for 1 guest to join us for our final hour of class where we will celebrate the completion of the course with the food we have made
All classes will be held from 5:30pm to 8:30pm on Tuesdays - Oct 29, Nov 5 and Nov 12.
