Join us in these fun and empowering programs designed for kids aged 8+ who want to learn how to be more than mere consumers of technology... by learning how to code, build and make them!
We are offering 3 distinct learning tracks:
Kids Learning Code, Introduction to Game Design (Ages 8-12*) 4:00pm - 5:00pm
Kids Learning Code, Intro to Programming the Web (Ages 8-12*) 5:15pm - 6:15pm
Kids Learning Code, Intermediate Game Design (Ages 8-12*) 6:30pm - 7:30pm
* please contact us if your child falls outside the age range as we try not to draw hard lines on age and will evaluate each child prior to making a decision.
PLEASE NOTE THERE IS ONE BY WEEK IN THE FOLLOWING SCHEDULE WHERE
THERE WILL BE NO CLASS HELD.
Each program covers 4 weeks of instruction and meets twice weekly as indicated on schedule. Join kidOYO every Tuesday and Thursday from March 4th to April 3rd, at the Village Center in Port Jefferson and prepare your kid for the future that is already here.
Kids Learning Code, Introduction to Game Design: Students will engage computational thinking challenges using a programming language developed at MIT called Scratch. Scratch helps young people learn to solve problems creatively, reason systematically and work collaboratively - essential skills in the 21st century. Upon completion of the program, students will possess the skills required to design their own game characters, build coded statements to create controlled character movements, random movements and coordinate these with audio outputs and other game elements. They will start their learning journey by working with instructors to create a simple multi-level game that they can continue to work on from home.
[ This Introductory class is a prerequisite for enrollment in the Intermediate program. ]
Kids Learning Code, Intro to Programming the Web: Learn to work with the language of the web to create webpages and host your own ideas online. Web literacy is becoming a critical skill for successfully interacting with the data-driven world, and learning to program the web is the gateway to personal empowerment. Students will learn about the tools and methods for creating their own website, with the goal being to translate their own creative ideas into code and publish that working code live to the internet. For students interested in making games, Youtube channels, business ventures, or other creative ideas... publishing to the web is vital for success!
Kids Learning Code, Intermediate Game Design: Students in this program will have working knowledge of basic game design principles and methods and will start working on more advanced concepts of game play to create more complex games using coding concepts advancing in complexity. Coding is an iterative process, and this program will challenge students to solve problems as they increase the complexity of their programs, and learn how to publish their completed creative works to the web.
If you need to utilize one of our laptops please purchase the monthly laptop rental listed on the ticket page. There is a $5 per class rental fee, $40 for the full 4 week cycle.
