Back-End Web Development

PHP is a server-side language with files that are processed before they are sent to a client computer. It's easily available in even the cheapest shared hosting servers and runs some of the biggest web sites on the Internet including Facebook, Ebay, Amazon, and Wikipedia. PHP also serves as the engine for most blogging platforms, including WordPress.

Day 1: Intro to PHP + Dynamic Web App Workshop
A lot of the big sites run on PHP – Facebook, Zynga, Wikipedia, and Wordpress.  We will explore the server-side language PHP that creates dynamic webpages.

Day 2: Getting Started with MySQL + Dynamic Web App Workshop
MySQL, the most popular Open Source SQL database management system, is developed, distributed, and supported by Oracle Corporation.  MySQL is a database management system. A database is a structured collection of data. It may be anything from a simple shopping list to a picture gallery or the vast amounts of information in a corporate network.

Day 3: Data Manipulation with PHP/MySQL + Dynamic Web App Workshop
To add, access, and process data stored in a computer database, you need a database management system such as MySQL Server.  Using PHP and MySQL we'll going to write scripts and queries to add, delete, edit, and search data.

Day 4: Advanced PHP/MySQL & Development + Dynamic Web App Workshop
We're going to explore advanced PHP/MySQL features like header and footer include files.  We'll look at data security, scrambling passwords, logins, and protecting pages.

We'll also develop our application on LAMP stack. Short for Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP, an open-source Web development platform, also called a Web stack, that uses Linux as the operating system, Apache as the Web server, MySQL as the RDBMS and PHP as the object-oriented scripting language. LAMP has become a de facto development standard. Today, the products that make up the LAMP stack are included by default in nearly all Linux distributions, and together they make a powerful web application platform.

Day 5: PHP  vs. Python vs. Ruby Plus Demos
We will explore today's popular back-end programming languages.  We'll compare Ruby, Python, and PHP to see how they stack up.  What are the differences and why programmers select one over the others and what companies use them.  To end the week each student will demo their dynamic web application.
