Along with remembering the historic work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., let's honor Coretta Scott King, who followed a vegan diet for the last ten years of her life, for both ethical and health reasons. Ethics/morals/values are infinitely important, but this class is all about HEALTH! Class starts on MLK Day and ends on Presidents' Day, 2014. In these five weeks, you will experience the support and encouragement of a qualified instructor (RN/nutritionist), a dedicated team (RDs, MDs), and others excited about improving themselves. Please join us; it just might change your life! (This is a weekly series for five weeks. Please plan to attend all classes for best results. Even if you have to miss a class, there is one registration type and one fee. It's time to commit to your own well-being!)
In the Culinary Center at Whole Foods Market in Napa, CA, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday evenings, Jan 20th to Feb 17th, 2014. No need to print your ticket. Food samples and handouts are included; books are extra and will be offered in the first class. Last class will include a potluck so you can share your favorite new recipes! The Power of Food for Healthy Weight Management
In a public health climate where 68 percent of adults in the U.S. are overweight or obese and millions have diabetes, the need for a lifestyle change is greater than it has ever been.
Depending on one's perspective, the Food for Life: Kickstart Your Health classes are about losing weight, maintaining a healthy weight, or simply embracing an overall healthful diet. For some people, it's the first time the idea of not restricting amounts of foods but rather choosing the right foods has been the guiding principle for losing weight and staying healthy. Lower cholesterol, better diabetes control, lower blood pressure, as well as improvements in energy and mood are some of the many benefits people experience on this diet.
The FFL Kickstart Your Health classes offer a chance to discover which foods are optimal for weight management, learn about various health topics including blood pressure and digestion, and get empowered with the practical cooking skills needed to help you on your journey to better health. In the classes, attendees do all of this while enjoying a cooking demonstration and tasting delicious, healthful dishes in a supportive group setting.

Kerri Zemko, RN, Nutrition Educator
Kerri Zemko is a nurse with a background in clinical research, oncology, and home care, who has been studying plant based nutrition for many years. She offers nutrition and cooking classes, private nutrition consulting and education. Kerri is associated with Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine; Wellness Forum Institute; and is a frequent volunteer with Dr. McDougall's medical center.
Kerri has had a lifelong interest in healthful living, wanting to avoid the degenerative diseases in her family history. She really started cleaning up her act in 2008 when she learned about plant-based (vegan) diet, decided to try it for a week, and never looked back. After experiencing leaps in all aspects of wellbeing, which she had never anticipated or thought possible, Kerri is grateful and joyful to be involved in helping others experience the same.
