Overview:

The advent of crowdfunding (i.e., using the internet to fund a project through small contributions) has forever changed the way creators and entrepreneurs finance their endeavors. The passage of the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act by Congress promises groundbreaking yet complicated changes in how businesses can raise money.

This workshop will help to demystify the evolving landscape of crowdfunding and other alternative sources of capital such as microfinance, convertible debt and accelerator programs. Using a combination of engaging presentations, audience participation and exercises, the course will offer a glimpse into the advantages, costs and pitfalls of various portals like Kickstarter and IndieGoGo, and provide a series of helpful strategies for implementing successful campaigns.

Content Summary:

  • Definitions, historical evolution and current status of crowdfunding
  • Analysis of leading crowdfunding portals (CFPs)
  • Legal, administrative and tax implications of CF campaigns
  • Overview of professional investor methodology
  • Alternative sources of capital: bootstrapping, FFF, convertible debt, accelerators, etc.
  • Strategies for successful campaigning
  • Crowdfunding case studies

Student Takeaways:

ü  Increased understanding of crowdfunding’s historical, financial and legal implications

ü  Become a more effective fundraiser by learning how to think like a professional investor

ü  Learn proven strategies for implementing a successful crowdfunding campaign

ü  Discover alternative sources of capital and how to access them

ü  Analyze actual crowdfunding campaigns; gain insights into structuring rewards

Student Requirements:

Students must bring a pen and pad of paper to use in the exercises and simulations.  All electronic devices must remain offline and silenced while the class is in progress.  The use of laptops and tablets will be permitted during lecture segments for note-taking purposes only.
