Session Descriptions

Exclusively breastfeeding babies require appropriate assessment and monitoring to ensure that they are receiving adequate nutrition. In order to prevent excessive weight loss , dehydration and hospital readmission, we will discuss the red flags that alert us to breastfeeding dyads who require early supplementation. Hear how anticipatory guidance, preventive use of mothers own milk, and hand expression can be employed to support breastfeeding.

When excessive weight loss or jaundice occurs, breastfeeding mothers need specific guidance on how to supplement with their own milk, and when and how to safely reduce supplementation and achieve exclusive breastfeeding. We will also explore care plans when exclusive breastfeeding is not possible.

“Not enough milk” is the most common reason for breastfeeding cessation. Yet, there are many, often interrelated causes, of insufficient milk supply. No matter the root cause, many womenlose confidence in their ability to make enough milk. We will discuss strategies you can use to help mothers develop trust in their body,  initiate a robust milk supply, or increase a low milk supply.

Case studies and scenarios will wrap up the day so that we can practice the information from the earlier sessions to support exclusive breastfeeding and keep babies safe from lack of milk.

Session Objectives

Following the didactic presentations, the participants will be able to:

  • Identify three strategies for increasing the use of mothers own milk in preventive supplementation;
  • Implement weaning from supplementation and restoring exclusive breastfeeding;
  • List six strategies to increase milk supply; and to
  • List three dangers of undifferentiated lactation management.
