Why Keep Romeo & Juliet Alive?
While studying the play may instruct students to the language, poetry and structure of the play, Shakespeare wrote his plays to be performed and watched. Only when his plays are performed, does the language come alive, and those lessons resonate with the students.
While many believe the play to be a romantic story, the true lessons of the play are in the tragedy of the story. The impetuous behavior of teenagers , making choices without considering the consequences, might have been pulled from today’s headlines or an entertainment newscast. This timelessness is what connects with young audiences.
