Scientific, engineering, and practical industrial aspects will be presented in a series of lectures and laboratory demonstrations in KGI’s ABC. The laboratory work will provide experience with many of the techniques and principles taught in that day’s lectures. Course attendees will gain first-hand experience in setting up, running, and analyzing data from high-density, fed-batch cultures in lab scale Applikon bioreactors.
The three-day Intensive training course integrates lectures and projects in a classroom setting with lab work or advanced projects gauged to the experience level of each participant.
In general, lectures and projects will occur in the morning, with lab demonstrations and advanced projects scheduled for the afternoon.
This format maximizes content appropriateness for each participant, offers the opportunity to apply lecture material to a lab or project/computational experiment, and provides ample time for student-instructor interaction.
- cell culture bioreactor design and scale-up, including aeration, mixing, and hydrodynamic/sparging impacts on cells, plus instrumentation and process control
- design and operation of high-density fed-batch and perfusion cultures
- design and operation of single use bioreactors
- integration of cell culture processes with downstream product recovery and purification
- facility design and operations, from disposables to large-scale stainless steel, including cleaning and sterilization
- key issues and tools used in industrial cell culture operations, including economies of scale, control charts, and process flow diagrams
- culture of cells using proper aseptic technique
- measurement of cell growth, death, and primary metabolism
- performance of mammalian cell culture operations under current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs)
- cleaning, sterilization, set-up, and operation of a laboratory-scale bioreactor, for growth of a high-density, fed-batch suspension culture
- measurement, tracking, and control of culture pH, oxygen, temperature and other environmental parameters
- thorough analysis of experimental cell culture results, including graphic data presentation, and proper results interpretation with appropriate statistical analyses
- Parviz Shamlou, PhD, with over 30 years of industry and academic experience in whole bioprocess design and development, will be leading the lectures on engineering design and modeling of cell culture bioreactors including traditional stirred bioreactors and single use bioreactors.
- Mike Hilgert, a veteran in bioprocess design, development an manufacturing will lead the section of the course on design, scale up of in the primary recovery including centrifugation, depth and membrane filtration.

- Lab demonstration sessions will be led by Kirilynn Svay, Lecturer and Director of Bioprocess Engineering Operations.
Who should apply?
KGI has designed this MCC course for a broad range of industry skills and experiences. The class will provide practical operations training for industry professionals with little/no lab experience as well as for those with considerable bioprocessing background.
The MCC course will be held at Keck Graduate Institute School of Applied Life Sciences, 535 Watson Drive, Claremont CA 91711. KGI is approximately 12 miles from the Ontario, California airport
After September 1, the fee is $2000 per attendee. Included within the fee are all lab equipment and supplies, handouts and materials, instruction, daily breakfast and lunch. A welcoming reception, Thursday evening dinner, as well as a Wine-Tasting Dinner to end the event Friday evening are also part of the fee. Accommodations and travel expenses are the participant’s responsibility. We can assist in securing convenient accommodations in Claremont.

Requests for refunds received by us between September 20 and October 3, 2014, will be made, minus a $500.00 processing fee.
No refunds will be given for any reason starting October 4, 2014.
