Kealing Center Stage History
Kealing Middle School, which opened in the fall of 1930, is named for Hightower Theodore Kealing, an Austin African-American educator, writer, editor, and activist. Today, Kealing is a unique school in the Austin Independent School District which offers an Academy Program that provides a rigorous and engaging curriculum to students in its East Austin neighborhood, and a comprehensive advanced academic Magnet Program that educates students from all over the city of Austin.
Kealing Center Stage began primarily as a community building event. Over the past three years, this fundraiser has developed to become the largest annual fundraising event for Kealing PTA. This event is supported and attended by a remarkable community of Kealing families, faculty, staff, friends, and businesses which have all come together to raise funds for Kealing PTA.
Kealing PTA supports Kealing Middle School by providing funding to many school-wide key initiatives including:
- Technology needs for students
- Teachers’ attendance at national conferences for professional development
- Educational field trips for students
- Popular programs such as music production and robotics
