Kathleen G. Velsor Ed.D.

The historic people, places and events that marked the significant role of the Long Island  region in the demise of slavery in the United States is the subject of “The Underground Railroad on Long Island: Friends in Freedom, the latest work of Kathleen Velsor associate professor in the School of Education at SUNY College at Old Westbury.

Kathleen published a historical novel for young adult readers Brother & Me ( 2005), Rosalie Ink.  She is also published in 4 books- Friends in Freedom, the Underground Railroad in Queens, Long Island and Beyond (2006), The Road to Freedom, (2001) a supplemental text for 7th graders, Angel of Deliverance the Underground Railroad in Queens, Long Island (1999) all published by the Queens Historical Society.

In spring 2004 her article “The Long Island Freedom Trail” vol.23. and in the spring 2009 “Sketch of the Life and Labors of Rev. Henry Highland Garnet” A Second Look vol.26 both were published in the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society Journal, She co- authored Engaging Students( 2012 a handbook for lesson and unit planning. 

Kathleen also serves as the director of the Underground Railroad Teaching Partnership through which she works with area school districts to perform training for teachers on the topic and expands people’s understanding of its impact on Long Island.   

Kathleen teaches undergraduate courses in the department of Elementary Education and Literacy.  She teaches courses for pre-service teachers in: Children’s Literature, Child Development, and Reading.

She earned an undergraduate degree in Fine Arts and Education from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri, and received her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and her Doctorate in Educational Research from The University of Cincinnati in Ohio.  Kathleen published numerous articles and books about educational issues.

Kathleen lives in Bayville, New York with her husband Curtis.  They have two children Peggy and Pieter. Peggy Velsor Sullivan lives in Clinton, Conn. with her husband Brad and two children Pheobe and Nolan.  Pieter and Jan Velsor live in Bayville with their three month old daughter Emma.

The  "TOP ADVOCATES FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION & EDUCATION" AWARDS RECEPTION takes place on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, 6pm to 8pm, at The Mansion at the Woodlands at Woodbury, One Southwoods Road, Woodbury, NY.
