During deposition questioning related to a civil lawsuit, celebrity chef Paula Deen admitted to having used a racial slur. The three-word admission ignited a public firestorm that has all but destroyed her food empire in a matter of weeks.
This presentation will unpack the Southern chef’s most recent (and still developing) public relations crisis to analyze some of the key communication strategies used by Deen, the media and the public. You’ll discover how this current case can become a recipe for risk and crisis management for your client or organization.
About the Speaker
Kevin S. Trowbridge, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of public relations at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., and the chair-elect for the PRSA Southeast District. Before pursuing a career in teaching, research and independent consulting, he practiced public relations in banking, health care, higher education, and association management. Since 1999, he has been an active member of PRSA.
Kevin Trowbridge is an assistant professor of public relations at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn. He has an extensive PR teaching portfolio, including the introductory course, PR research, social media and PR, design, writing, media relations, cases, campaigns, as well as PR planning and management. Trowbridge earned his Ph.D. in communication where his research investigated how social media engagement affected organization-public relationships. He holds a Master’s degree from The University of Memphis and a Bachelor’s degree from Union University in Jackson. Before pursuing a career in teaching, research and independent consulting, he practiced public relations in banking, health care and higher education in West Tennessee and finally at an international member-based association in Washington, D.C. Since 1999, Trowbridge has been an active member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and involved at local, district and national levels. Currently he is the chair-elect for the PRSA Southeast District.
