Judd Apatow and Dave Eggers host an evening of music and comedy to celebrate the release of I Found This Funny, a collection of humorous writing edited by Judd Apatow, with work by some of his favorite authors. The book will be released by McSweeney’s on October 22, 2010, and showcases many different styles of writing, from fiction to short humor to essays to comedy sketches to poetry. Featured writers include Nora Ephron, Paul Feig, Jonathan Franzen, Steve Martin, Lorrie Moore, Conan O'Brien, David Sedaris, and many more. Proceeds from the book will go to 826 National, a non-profit tutoring, writing, and publishing organization with locations in eight cities across the country.

 

All proceeds from event ticket sales will benefit 826LA. Now in its fifth year, 826LA’s fundraising events have established a reputation for being completely unique nights, filled with impressive lineups and side-splitting laughs. On this special evening, laughing at lowbrow (and highbrow) humor benefits the greater good, as the show’s proceeds directly fund student writing and tutoring programs at 826LA.

About the Hosts:

Judd Apatow was co-creator and executive producer of The Ben Stiller Show and Undeclared; co-executive producer of The Larry Sanders Show; and executive producer of Freaks and Geeks. He’s produced many of the most successful films in recent years, including The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, which he also wrote and directed. Most recently, Apatow released his third directorial feature, Funny People, which the New Yorker, the New York Times, and Vanity Fair included on their lists of the top ten films of 2009.

 

Dave Eggers is the author of seven books and two screenplays, including Where the Wild Things Are. His book What Is the What was a finalist for the 2006 National Book Critics Circle Award and winner of France's Prix Médicis Etranger. Eggers’ most recent book, Zeitoun, was awarded the American Book Award and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Eggers is the founder and editor of McSweeney's, an independent publishing house based in San Francisco. In 2002, with Ninive Calegari, he co-founded 826 Valencia, a nonprofit writing and tutoring center for youth in the Mission District of San Francisco. 826 chapters have now opened up in eight cities, including Los Angeles.

826LA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Its services are structured around the belief that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. In its fifth year, 826LA currently provides drop-in tutoring, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners and assistance with student publications. 826LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.

Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

With this in mind, we provide after-school and in-school tutoring, creative workshops, field trips, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications.

All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.

Hello!
First off, THANK YOU so very much for purchasing a ticket to this funraiser for 826LA! We rely on the generosity of folks like to you to keep our successful programs for Los Angeles youth FREE.

Here is some important details about the event. Please feel free to contact us at 213 413 3388, if you have any questions at all.

PARKING: Prepaid parking is available for ALL ticket ranges. The structure is next to and to the NORTH of the Writers Guild Theater (135 S. Doheny Drive.) Please enter the lot from the alley north of the Writers Guild Theater, just south of Wilshire Blvd.

Pull a ticket when you drive in and present your printed ticket for the event and the attendant will hand you a validation which you will use to exit for free at the end of the night. It is important that everyone needs to be in possesion of TWO parking tickets AND your event ticket.

When you get ready to leave, you will need to insert the original ticket you pulled followed by the validation ticket you received from the attnedant. Don't be alarmed if the balance due appears on the screen after you insert the original ticket, validation will zero that out and the gate will rise allowing you to exit.

If you did not receive a ticket on your way in, it is possible that the attendent has stepped away from their post. In this case, please go to the parking office before you come to the event and ask for a validation ticket. The parking office is located just north of the theater and to the immediate left when you enter the parking structure.

Parking is free from 5 p.m. until 12 a.m. only. You must retrieve your vehicle prior to 12 a.m., or you will be charged for the next day.

CHECK IN: There will be two lines, VIP and General Admission. Please present the ticket that was emailed to you with your confirmation. If you can not print a ticket with your name on it because you are part of a group - we will have a printed list and we can look you up with no problem.

VIP: Doors open at 7 p.m. for pre-event beer and wine in the lobby. Individual purchases are listed by name. Group purchases are listed by group, then by name. If you are a part of a large group, please indicate whose list you are on. You will recieve your signed copy of the book* and a wristband at that time. Only those with wristbands will have access to the bar, preferred seating and after-party. *If you prefer to pick your book up on the way out we would be glad to hold it for you.

GENERAL ADMISSION: Doors are scheduled to open at 7:30, but we will probably open earlier. Individual purchases are listed by name. Group purchases are listed by group, then by name. If you are a part of a large group, please indicate whose list you are on. You will receive your copy of the book at check in. Seating is general admission in the theater.

EVERYONE: The show is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. Extra copies of I Found This Funny will be available for purchase in the lobby.

We have a limited number of tickets remaining and we would LOVE to sell out this event, if you have friends or family who you think would enjoy this event (and would like to support 826LA) who have not yet purchased tickets, please click the link in this email and invite them!
