Joyce Andersen is putting a new spin on the ancient art form of the fiddle troubadour, and her new CD "Swerve" showcases her new solo concert sound that combines fiddle traditions with modern technology.
With 20 years of sideman, solo and studio experience, including appearances on Conan O'Brien and at Carnegie Hall, she is a veteran fiddler and a widely-respected singer-songwriter who has found a new way to bring together the old and the new. "I really respect and celebrate the beauty and power of the acoustic violin in my sound. It's one of the few perfected things in this world," she says, "But I started experimenting with some amazing electronic enhancements for my violin and it's ...well, electrifying!"
You'll still hear fiddle tunes, bluegrass, and sometimes a little Bach, but she now commands a staggering wall of sound that emanates from her violin, viola, Norwegian Hardanger fiddle, and foot percussion. Lush acoustic violin tones are juxtaposed with swirling electro-acoustic explorations and even crunching rock distortion, as she tackles an extraordinary repertoire of not only her own songs but ambitious covers of Billie Holiday, Ralph Stanley, Steppenwolf and even Jimi Hendrix.
"SWERVE" is all-solo, all-live, and defines her new "Electro-Acoustic Fiddle Troubadour" sound. It is a significant departure from her 4 previous solo recordings, as well as the 4 recordings she has made with her husband, folk journeyman Harvey Reid. On record and in concert Andersen digs deep, and delights in extended improvisational rides over her new musical landscapes. Above it all is her powerful and distinctive voice, soaring, urging, passionately inviting, soothing and reigning over the musical mayhem.
