Topic: Update on Orange County Sanitation District's CIP Program
Speaker: Robert C. Thompson, PE, Director of Engineering at OCSD
Robert Thompson is the Director of Engineering. Mr. Thompson came to OCSD in 1995 as an Electrical Engineer in the Operations and Maintenance Division. Shortly thereafter, he was promoted to Manager of the Process Controls Division to oversee the maintenance, installation and programming of the District’s SCADA system and programmable logic controllers. In addition, Mr. Thompson had a lead role in creating and maintaining engineering, programming, and tagging standards for the District.
In 2005 Mr. Thompson was transferred to Operations and Maintenance as an Engineering Manager along with his existing staff and responsibilities. He successfully led the instrumentation shops, electrical shops and power generation plants. In 2010 Mr. Thompson was transferred to the Asset Management Division where he led the Districts effort to improve maintenance and capital planning to minimize District risk and lifecycle costs. In 2012 Mr. Thompson was transferred to the Engineering Planning Division along with the asset management staff and responsibilities. Mr. Thompson improved the planning process using asset management principles to improve condition assessment and project execution efficiency. Prior to joining OCSD, Mr. Thompson worked for The Ralph M. Parsons Company as a senior engineer and project manager on several major oil field project in Prudhoe Bay Alaska, refinery projects in Philadelphia, PA, and coordinated world-wide sulfur technology sales.
Mr. Thompson is a registered Electrical Engineer and a Civil Engineer in the States of California and Washington. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona, and a Master’s in Public Administration from Long Beach State.
