Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM (CST)
You are invited to a
discussion of the film The Searchers, led by
Professor Stuart Warner, Associate Professor of Philosophy
and Director of the Montesquieu Forum
***PLUS, an Oscar ballot contest***
The Loop/Lake Shore Chapter invites you to join us as we welcome Professor Stuart Warner as he discusses the iconic film The Searchers (1956) the classic John Ford western, starring John Wayne. While not a major contender for the Academy Awards, it has since become a classic film, and is often heralded as one of the greatest films of American cinema history. The American Film Institute named The Searchers the greatest American western and it placed 12th on the AFI's list of 100 greatest American movies of all time. The British Film Institute ranked it as the 7th best film, and Cahiers du cinema voted The Searchers as the 10th greatest film. And in 1989, the United States Library of Congress deemed The Searchers "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
The film stars Wayne as Ethan Edwards, a Civil War vet who spends years searching for his kidnapped niece (Natalie Wood). His family was massacred by Comanches who abducted his niece. Intent on vengeance and retribution, Edwards' five-year journey challenges his views of justice and what's right. A brilliant movie, The Searchers invites great discussion and dialogue. As Prof. Warner put it so succinctly, "[The Searchers] raises a host of questions about justice, racism, America, passion, love, redemption, myth, and civilization."
During the lecture, we will see excerpts from the film (but not the film in its entirety). The Searchers is available on Amazon Instant Video (free to Prime members and $2.99 to others) and on Netflix DVD. If you haven't seen The Searchers, it is a must-see; if you have seen The Searchers, it's a must see again.
And since we're getting so close to the Academy Awards ceremony, we're also going to have an Oscar ballot contest. Those who attend the discussion will be eligible for some great prizes:
1st prize: $30 gift certificate to AMC Theaters
2nd prize: a copy of Glenn Frankel's excellent book The Searchers: The Making of an American Legend, which not only tells the story of how the film was made, but also shares the true story on which the film was based.
3rd prize: a 2-DVD collector's edition of The Searchers
425 S. Wabash Ave.
