Sketchbook with Jewelry Layout


This is a class for those will some jewelry-making skills who are looking for guidance on pursuing their own projects. Each week, students will work on projects of their own choice. With personalized attention, students will be guided into problem solving, tackling more complex design, soldering solutions and introduction to different tooling not covered in Jewelry I or Jewelry II.


Jewelry I and II or by appointment with the instructor prior to the class. Instructor will review student work from other programs.

What to Bring:

Students should bring a $25 materials fee to cover the cost of consumables as well as a project or ideas for a project. Students will coordinate with Karen to arrange for purchase of project materials.

Instructor Biography:

Karen Christians

Karen Christians is an educator and maker in the metal arts. She developed the metals program at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, founded Metalwerx in Waltham, a non-profit school for jewelry and the metal arts, and the new jewelry section of the Hot Craft Studio at Artisans Asylum in Somerville. She teaches nationally, lectures around the country, and is published in many professional and technical magazines. She is the author of the book, "Making the Most of Your Flex-Shaft." Karen holds a BFA with High Honors from the Massachusetts College of Art. She is currently writing a second book, "The Jewelry of Burning Man."

Artisan's Asylum, Inc.

Artisan's Asylum is a community fabrication and makerspace near Union Square, Somerville MA, that is dedicated to making creativity a way of life. It does this by maintaining a community workshop, training its members in the use of all of its professional-grade equipment, and hosting events promoting the learning and practicing of craft and creative expression.
