Jesus Loves You! (but hates me)
Take an irreverent ride through writer/performer Thea Deley's religious childhood in her solo show, “Jesus Loves You! (but hates me)” Nov. 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Miller Hall, 1373 Grant St., Denver. (Basement of First Baptist Church.)
“Thea Deley has created a brave show—funny,
serious and moving. As she indicts the religious right that
warped her childhood, she also finds compassion for all
concerned. Clever and deeply felt.”
—Marty Durlin, playwright and former manager
of KGNU Community Radio
You’ll meet the Sunday School teacher who warned Thea about brushing with Satan’s toothpaste. You’ll meet the Bible Study friend who wanted to protect Thea’s virginity. (Although too late for Thea, you’ll have a shot at Secondary Virginity during her show!)
You’ll compete for cool prizes during audience games like Bible Feud. And just like in real life, every couple of minutes you’ll watch commercials for products you don’t need, like Communion On-the-Go.
“Amazing, provocative, stunning and sharp.
Thea’s articulation of what it means to be human and
to love couldn’t have come across more clearly.”
—Rev. Brian Henderson, First Baptist Church of Denver minister
Hailed as Paonia’s “Queen of Comedy” by the Glenwood Post Independent, Thea impersonates a pew’s worth of characters in her two-act play. But it’s not all fun and games. Being threatened with hell and damnation is pretty scary stuff for a kid. “By sharing—and laughing at—my own story,” Thea says, “I replace the fear and superstition of my childhood with my new religion: love and personal responsibility.”
What better venue to see the show at than a progressive church on Capitol Hill committed to the very same ideals!
"It is not an everyday occurrence that I go to a comedy
expecting religion-bashing and instead find myself
healing my own grievances against religion."
—Metro State student reporter Kaitlyn Lamb
Audience members will have a chance to talk about their reactions to the show and share their own experiences at a Speakeasy session immediately following the performance. Light refreshments will be available by donation, and facilitators will help small groups feedback what they have in common—or differently—with Thea’s story.
Oh, and don't forget the complimentary wine and cheese!
