Mary Ann Ahern
Mary Ann Bergerson Ahern joined the NBC 5 Chicago news team in March 1989, as a general assignment reporter. Before coming to NBC 5, Ahern was the political reporter for WXIA-TV, the Gannett-owned station in Atlanta, Georgia from 1985 to 1989. She served as Reporter/Weekend Anchor at WEEK-TV in Peoria, Illinois from 1982 to 1985.
Ahern is best known for covering Cardinal Bernardin's final years and the selection of Francis Cardinal George. She has traveled to Rome with the Cardinal in June 1997, for his first trip representing Chicago. Ahern returned to Rome in February of 1998 when George was elevated to the College of Cardinals.
Mary Ann covered the announcement of Pope Francis, the first Jesuit Pope. In addition, she covered Pope John Paul II on five of his Papal trips over the years, including: New York, Denver, South Carolina, St. Louis and Cuba. In Cuba, Ahern was one of the few American journalists allowed to report from Havana over a ten day period.
During her reporting career in Chicago, Ahern has covered everyday events from elections to snowstorms, from City Hall to Wrigley Field. She has filed reports on the Democratic National Convention, Princess Diana's visit to Chicago, the Bulls championship season and the White House.
In 1991, she was the first reporter in Chicago to uncover the priest pedophile scandal that eventually led to changes in how the Chicago Archdiocese handles such cases.
A native of Michigan City, Indiana, Ahern graduated with a B.A. degree from John Carroll University. While working as a teacher at two Chicago area High Schools, Ahern received her Master's degree in Education from Northeastern Illinois University, and another Master's degree in Journalism from Northwestern University. Mary Ann and her husband, Thomas, have three children.
