ABOUT THE LOVING CUP CEREMONY
The Loving Cup Ceremony predates the founding of Kappa Alpha Psi and it has been ritualized by many social, professional, and civic organizations across the globe. It originated during the Middle Ages as a means of building unity amongst the Saxon tribes of Britain. Similar ceremonies have been adopted by Franco-, Greco-, and Judaic cultures. There is no documented history of the loving cup ceremony being adopted by Kappa Alpha Psi, however the lifting of a cup of joy and health is referenced in the The Hymn. The ceremony has historically been the most sacred conducted by members of the Fraternity, but functionally, it has been replaced by the Oath of Rededication, which is universally recognized and authorized. Nevertheless, the Loving Cup Ceremony retains a cherished place in the lore of the Fraternity and, as such, is still observed at the local level.
