James Robert Webb

There is magic in the hands of Oklahoma native, James Robert Webb. As a physician, those hands provide healing, helping patients find freedom from pain in his thriving medical practice. Catch him in his spare time at a local music venue, though, and you will hear his hands doling out soul-soothing music with his unique blend of traditional country and Americana.

Webb grew up in rural Oklahoma in a town called Kellyville. He started playing piano at a young age and picked up guitar in his teens, self-taught on both.

That ability to play by ear would serve him well in his music career as he pursued jazz (he was an Oklahoma All-State Jazz pianist) and later other improvisational genres such as Western swing.

His music career took a backseat to his 13 year post-high school education--Webb is a medical doctor who treats patients with chronic pain. Still, he continued to develop, first as an instrumentalist, then a songwriter and finally a singer. “Playing guitar and piano was a way to stay sane during all those years of training—it was definitely a creative outlet for me.” In 2010 Webb started writing and recording songs in his home by studying his favorite songwriters.

"I listen to virtually every kind of music there is, but when it comes to country music, I am mostly moved by the traditional country music and honky tonk, as well as the vocal stylists.  Brooks & Dunn, Miranda Lambert, Garth Brooks, Toby Keith, Willie Nelson, Vince Gill—these are the kinds of artists that I relate to the most.  In my personal opinion, that’s what’s missing from country radio today—country music.  Namely, fiddle and steel.”

Webb shows his unique country sound in his upcoming Christmas album. For his upcoming full-length Christmas album, Webb chose a mix of covers and new material.  Quality was the main concern in song selection.  “As an artist and producer, I wanted to choose songs that respect my influences.  A good example is Blue Christmas.  Knowing my voice, everyone thinks Elvis.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Elvis fan, but this is a country album—so we choose the classic Ernest Tubb recording as our reference.”

Webb also recorded Roger Miller’s “Old Toy Trains”.  “I have three kids so this is a special song to me, kind of like a lullaby.  And we produced it to pretty much stay true to the original.  We made it a little longer because the original recording just barely makes the 2 minute mark.”

Also included are versions of Burl Ive’s ‘Holly Jolly Christmas’and Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmas Time”.  “I wanted to do something different with Holly Jolly Christmas and we gave it a great western swing feel, like Bob Wills.  We came up with ‘Wonderful Christmas Time’ because it’s a great song, but I couldn’t find a country version of it.  Well, now there is.”

There are five original songs on the project, including two co-written by Webb, Born This Day and I Wanna Be Your Santa Claus.

James Robert Webb’s Christmas album will be available for December 7th.
