Description

The Action Now: Classroom Ready Teachers report by the Teacher Education Ministerial Advisory Group recommended that teacher education providers utilise measures for selecting teaching candidates.

In Australia, different procedures are used to select teaching candidates, such as ATAR scores, personality assessments and interviews. However, the effectiveness of these approaches is inconclusive.

Since 2012, the University of Melbourne has embarked on an innovative research program on strategic teacher candidate selection. The result is TeacherSelector, a tool that supports selection and assesses a range of cognitive, behavioural and motivational characteristics using online assessments and questionnaires.

The presenters will:

  • examine contemporary approaches to the selection of teaching candidates and the effectiveness of these approaches
  • examine teacher selection as part of the solution to improve the quality of teaching in schools
  • engage in policy relevant discussion on teacher selection
  • explain the rationale and approach of TeacherSelector as a tool to inform teacher selection
  • describe key learnings from TeacherSelector to date and explore possibilities for its expansion
  • discuss where to next for teacher selection and its implications.

The Centre for Program Evaluation (CPE) is a trans-disciplinary evaluation and research centre. Over the past 30 years, the Centre has undertaken evaluations and research projects for government departments, non-government organisations and community-based agencies across a wide range of policy and program areas, but particularly in the areas of education, health, social wellbeing and international community development.

A new International Teacher Education Effectiveness Research Hub (iTEERH) within the Centre for Program Evaluation was launched on 7 July.

The Research Hub will be led by Associate Professor Janet Clinton and staffed by a team of researchers. It will also call on specialist experience from across the Graduate School, as well as from our national and international partners, so that we will have a shared impact.

This establishment of an international, central and cohesive hub is critical as the pressure mounts to demonstrate the effectiveness and impact of teacher education programs.
