About the Film: The Green Prince

The Green Prince is a documentary film, recounting the shocking but true story of the son of one of Hamas's founders and leaders, switching allegiance and becoming a spy and informant for the Israeli Secret Service. Mosab Hassan Yousef grew up in Ramallah, and like most Arab Palestinians, he was angry and ready to fight Israel. Arrested for smuggling guns at the age of 17, he was interrogated by the Shin Bet, Israel's security service, and sent to prison. Shocked by Shin Beit's humane and normal methods of interrogation, in comparison to Hamas's ruthless tactics of torture and execution, coupled with Hamas's escalating campaign of suicide bombings, Mosab agreed to spy for Israel. His "handler" at Shin Bet, Gonen Ben Yitzhak, the responsibility to maintain the relationship and flow of information, was literally a case of life and death to his fellow-Israelis.

The Green Prince was released only in January this year at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won a World Cinema Documentary prize; it was the stand-out hit of the recent Docaviv film festival held here at the cinemateque in Tel Aviv and, as it continues its screenings in the festival circuit, it is tipped for numerous more awards and a potential Oscar nomination.

About the Speaker: Gonen Ben Itzhak

Gonen Ben Yitzhak served in the Israeli navy for 3 years, then did a degree in Psychology and Management at Ben Gurion University in Beer Sheva.  In 1996, just after the assassination of Yitzak Rabin, he Joined the ISS – Israeli Secret Service known as "Shin Bet" and was stationed in Ramallah . It was during this time that he became in charge of The Green Prince - the son of Sheik Hassan Yousef – one of the Hamas founders in the West Bank and one of their key figures and leaders. This was one of the ISS's most sensitive operations in its history- the information garnered from this operation is thought to have prevented numerous suicide bombs and attacks, and saved countless lives. We are privileged to welcome the man who managed "The Green Prince" and lived this story.
