About This Course

Who's it for?

This one-day workshop is ideal for web developers who want to learn how to make HTML5-based browser games; or game developers looking to create for the browser. Attendees should have some experience with programming concepts.  Familiarity with JavaScript or ActionScript development would be helpful, but not necessary.

What you'll learn:

Using the skills you'll acquire in this course, you'll be able to create a graphical, 2D browser-based game with physics (think Angry Birds). You'll apply tools like Canvas, HTML5 Audio, and physics engines such as box2d to create games with environments and obstacles. Finally, you'll see how to put it all together with a player and keyboard controls.

Course Outline:

  • Browser-based development tools
  • JavaScript & jQuery primer
  • HTML5 features for games:
  • Canvas
  • Animation
  • Audio
  • Physics
  • Final workshop - put your game together

Attendees should bring a laptop with WiFi and a power cord, ready with a text editor and the latest Google Chrome browser.

We also recommend one of the following text editors: TextMate, MacVim, Coda, E TextEditor, Notepad++, or UltraEdit. The most important thing is that attendees use a text editor they're comfortable with.
