From Personal Geometry series of 16 prints, Beka Goedde, 2011

photolithography, screenprint and collage.

This 4-week course will cover the basics of photolithography while exploring techniques using photo plates.  Photosensitive aluminum plates are exposed to UV light and developed with simple chemistry.  You will be able to make beautifully tonal photolithographic prints, from drawing in pencil and ink on tracing paper or films. In four weeks, Beka will cover preparing your images and drawings, preparing paper for printing, exposing and developing photolitho plates, basic photolitho inking techniques and also printing in layers.

You will be able to walk away with at least one two-layer photolitho print of your very own.

What You Bring: Design sketches, and editioning paper (guidelines to be covered in class).

What we provide: Photolitho Plates, necessary chemicals, suitable drawing materials and stencil supplies, proofing paper and printing ink.

You will also be allowed 12 additional hours of print studio access, to be used during or up to 3 months after the end of class (schedule permitting).

The Gowanus Studio Space

In an era when art encompasses infinite amalgams of visual media, The Gowanus Studio Space encourages inter-disciplinary exchange and provides affordable access to facilities for artists and designers.  Offering exhibition, curation and production opportunities, the studio is an incubator for new ideas and an inroad to today's insular art world.

The GSS' 40+ members rent low-cost studios and storage and have 24-hour access to a woodshop, print studio and large common workspace.  GSS was established with little funding in industrial Gowanus in 2007, and is now in the final stage of an ambitious move to a new 7500 sq-ft home.
