Intro to Data Science: Predicting the Future with Data
Tuesday, January 15th from 8 pm - 9:30 pm
Ravi Iyer, Principal Data Scientist, Ranker.com

Do you want to create a recommendation engine for your customers? Predict which employees at your company will leave or stay? Predict where your future sales will come from or whom to target with your next marketing campaign?

In this course, we'll cover the basics of how to answer such questions using data, using examples from Ranker's aggregation and recommendation algorithms, Nate Silver's election predictions, and market research.

Rather than thinking of data as either right or wrong, we'll learn to objectively examine the strengths and weaknesses ineherent in any data driven analysis, with the goal of improving your current data analysis, data collection, or data consumption.

Target Audience:

  • Someone who has data and wants to use it to make predictions
  • Someone who is considering collecting or purchasing data and wants to know what kind of data to collect
  • Someone who consumes data driven research and wants to be able to critique it more precisely

Student Takeaways:

  • An understanding of basic statistical techniques such as sampling, measurement, and significance.
  • An understanding of common errors made in making predictions, using cases such as the presidential election, the financial crisis, and recommendation engines.
  • Basic understanding of how to create a recommendation algorithm.
  • How to use the Wisdom of Crowds principle in any prediction.
