Event Details

This is a new offering at CRASH space - an Intro to Arduino with a revised curriculum that will send you home with a simple working project in a box.

An Arduino Board is a simplified way to create interactive devices that fit your own needs.  The Arduino community has lowered the bar for getting in started in microcontrollers. It is an open project that puts no limits on how far you can go. They are used in everything from cat toys to 3D printers to Unmanned Airborne Vehicles.

Attendees will learn how to use an Arduino to control multiple LEDs with an analog sensor and will be able to theme their project based on various pictures that will be made available. Or you can draw your own!

The kit will include:

  • An Arduino Uno
  • A USB cable
  • Multiple LED's
  • 9 V Battery & Adapter
  • Medium sized breadboard
  • Various LEDs
  • Photocells, a potentiometer, a button and other components
  • Precut wires and jumpers
  • Handy Printouts to help get the parts correctly wired

You'll learn:

  • How to navigate the sometimes confusing Arduino hardware landscape
  • Essential information about common components used in electronics
  • How to create basic DC circuits
  • How to control LED's, booth on/off and fading with a microcontroller
  • How to get information from the world into your code and what to do with it
  • How to take your projects forward in the future and where to go to learn more
  • You'll be shown that once you know how to control an LED you know how to control motors and a whole host of other options.
What you'll need to bring:
  •  A laptop with a USB port with the Arduino software installed. If you can't bring a laptop you will still be able to follow along and the instructor can load code onto your Arduino at the end of class.

PREREQ'S: None. This class will get you exposed to electronics and programming and how they work together. The curriculum has been designed to be flexible based on the level of knowledge of the students involved. Total novices will go home with a finished project. Those with some knowledge will have enough to take things further and should feel free to ask questions about how to fill the gaps they need.

The class is being taught by Carlyn Maw, a founder and previous President of CRASH Space. She has taught Arduino classes in university and corporate settings, as well as various arts & technical organizations around L.A.
