INTERNATIONAL DOOR ASSOCIATION IDA EXPO 2013

The International Door Association (IDA) invites architects and other interested design
professionals to attend complimentary AIA CES approved seminars by manufacturers
in the overhead door and access systems industry on topics such as Fire Doors, Safety
Sensors, Sectional Doors and High Performance Fabric and Rigid Rolling Doors. 
These manufacturers are among the more than 125 suppliers of products and services
participating in the IDA’s annual Exposition for door and access systems dealers at the
Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center.
 
In addition to the seminars, architects are invited to visit the exhibition hall on Friday,
May 10 to meet and talk with the manufacturers and to see what’s new in the door and
access systems industry.

Registration, seminars, admission to the exhibit hall, lunch – all are free for architects,
associate architects and other design professionals.

INTRODUCTION TO UPWARD ACTING SECTIONAL DOORS

Learning Objectives:
• The participant will be able to determine and be able to specify the best type of sectional door 
  for the application including strength (durability) thermal efficiency and function including whether
  the sectional is the best application for the opening.
• The participant will understand the headroom requirements and sideroom requirement s for 
  sectional products and special track arrangements for design considerations.
• The participant will understand different insulation types in sectional doors and features and
  benefits of the different insulation types.
• The participant will understand and Identify different types of operations for the door including the
  counterbalance mechanism, and either manual and electrical opener systems and combinations.

Designing with Rolling Steel Fire Doors

1. Explain the intent of every fire door.
2. Describe rolling steel fire doors, the associated testing agencies and applicable codes
3. Illustrate basic rolling steel fire door design including mounting methods and explain why design
    is critical to safety.
4. Describe the difference between listed and labeled with regard to standards such as UL.
5. Explain the importance of Drop Testing and describe the associated requirements.

ENTRAPMENT PROTECTION:  SENSING SOLUTIONS AND THE NEW SAFETY STANDARD

Learning Objectives:
• Recognize the need for entrapment protection on motorized commercial and industrial doors 
  to minimize the risk of injury to personnel and damage to products or equipment.
• Identify relevant industry codes and standards.
• Describe the functional and operational aspects of sensing edges.
• Differentiate between sensing edge actuation methods and monitoring functions and specify the
  appropriate sensing edge to meet the design and safety requirements.

High Performance Rolling Doors

1. Identify several environmental and physical security factors addressed by high performance fabric
    and rigid rolling doors.
2. Explain the limitations of conventional sectional and rolling steel doors in terms of cycleability and
    repairability /maintenance.
3. Discuss key features of both high performance fabric and rigid rolling doors in terms of cycleability,
    safety, repairability and environmental control.
4. Explain heat loss as associated with rolling doors and the effectiveness of insulation vs. minimal
    open time.
5. List three design considerations required to properly apply a high performance door and identify
    several appropriate applications.
