The Interdisciplinary Community Education (ICE) workshops are designed to provide current information pertaining to support and services for people with disabilities and their families. These sessions are designed with both community and professional in mind. 

 

Tennessee Allies in Self-Advocacy: Promoting self-advocacy across the state

Description: It can be difficult for individuals with disabilities to learn to speak up for themselves and become their own self-advocates, especially since those who support them often assume they know what is best without allowing them to have their own voices to express their personal interests, needs, and desires. In response, Tennessee Allies in Self-Advocacy (TASA), a statewide network of individuals with disabilities and agencies, is working together to provide individuals with disabilities the tools, resources, and support they need to increase their abilities to become self-advocates for themselves and the disability community. TASA was created in March 2011 based on a national initiative, Allies in Self-Advocacy, led by the Administration on Developmental Disabilities. TASA initially began discussing the successes and challenges associated with self-advocacy, and is continuing to determine how to address some of the challenges. By attending this workshop, you can be an important part of the effort. Together we can create better access to the information and support individuals with disabilities need to become self-advocates.

Through participation in this workshop, participants will:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of Tennessee Allies in Self-Advocacy and the importance of its efforts
  2. Recognize the needs and interests individuals with disabilities have in becoming self-advocates
  3. Develop strategies to support Tennessee Allies in Self-Advocacy in promoting self-advocacy among individuals with disabilities throughout the state
  4. Apply the knowledge they gain to address barriers identified within their professions and local communities that individuals with disabilities experience in becoming self-advocates

The University of Tennessee Boling Center is an accredited provider through the Commission on Dietetic Registration. CPEU activities are pre-approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration for Registered Dietitians and Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR).
