Scott Slavick, Trademark Attorney, Brinks
Scott’s practice focuses primarily on trademark prosecution and trademark litigation, and he maintains all aspects of his large corporate clients’ trademark portfolios. He has extensive experience in international trademark matters, including litigation, licensing and prosecution, determining international filing strategies, negotiating worldwide co-existence agreements and implementing strategies to defend trademarks and prevent infringements. He works with associates around the world, and thus can help clients decide what resources to work with. Scott’s clients also rely on his expertise in trade secret law, where he focuses on its use in the employment context, particularly in connection with non-compete agreements, confidentiality agreements and restrictive covenants. Scott is also deeply versed in the legal implications of exploiting social media for commercial gain—a direction prompted by requests from many of his largest clients.
David Lindner, IP Attorney, Brinks
David Lindner focuses his practice on litigation, U.S. and foreign patent prosecution, and opinion counseling. He has worked with technologies such as telecommunications, computer networks, the Internet, computer software, speech systems, power meters, electronic circuitry, medical inhalation devices, and business method patents. Mr. Lindner is a member of the firm's Pro Bono Committee and works with Lawyers for the Creative Arts to provide legal assistance to individuals in the arts.
Elisa M. Valenzona, Senior Counsel, Trademarks Patent & Trademark Dept, Abbott Labs
Elisa M. Valenzona is Senior Counsel at Abbott Laboratories serving as lead trademark counsel for three divisions, Abbott Nutrition (pediatric), Animal Health and Corporate. Elisa specializes in trademark clearance, prosecution and enforcement matters and her current portfolio consists of over 12,000 marks in approximately 120 countries. Elisa also assists internal clients on all aspects of commercial IP matters including due diligence support in M & A transactions. In addition, Elisa is lead counsel on pushing forward the acceptance of Abbott’s .ABBOTT gTLD application and development of a company and affiliate-wide strategy for implementation of same. Prior to joining Abbott, Elisa was an Associate at Brinks, Hofer, Gilson & Lione in Chicago, IL and Associate Counsel at Ty, Inc. (the “Beanie Baby®” plush toy company) in Oakbrook, IL. Elisa received her B.A. from University of Illinois- Chicago (1991) and her J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law (1998).
Brian Friedman, Managing Director, First Analysis
Brian Friedman is a managing director in investment banking. Prior to joining First Analysis in 2010, he was an executive vice president and co-head of investment banking at National Securities Corp. since 1997, where he managed more than 40 capital markets and M&A transactions in a diverse range of industries, including health care, energy and clean tech, technology, and financial services. As a founder and managing director of Robotics Ventures, a subsidiary of National Securities, he was in charge of analyzing target companies, securing exclusive relationships with top industry experts, and raising venture capital. Previously, he was an associate at Liberty Hampshire Co., a boutique investment firm where he worked on debt and equity proposals. He holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Iowa and a J.D./MBA from IIT Chicago Kent College of Law.
Bob Dutzi, VP and GM at ITW
Bob currently is a VP/GM at ITW for the global fuel and seating business within the transportation segment. His 20 year career with ITW started in engineering and subsequently included opportunities in development, sales, and manufacturing for various automotive product lines. Bob is currently the holder of over 13 US patents award, numerous international patents, and additional patents pending. Bob holds a master of science in product development from the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.; and a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Kettering University in Flint, MI (formerly GMI Engineering & Management Institute).
