Event Details

If you’re a developer, programmer, creative or endeavor to become one, you should be aware that the easiest way you can protect the products of your efforts is by copyrighting them. Software and creative work fall under the category of Intellectual Property, and must be protected in order to preserve the legal rights of the original author.

Having this in Mind, we have reached out to a number of practitioners who were willing to come and run sessions on different topics at the iHub. We will have the first talk and one on one session with the Lawyers at the iHub this Wednesday the 10th starting 2pm.

Our first talk will be lead by Marisella Ouma, the Executive Director of the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) and an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya who has thirteen years of well-rounded experience in law, specializing in Intellectual Property Law with a bias to copyright and related rights. She together with other few lawyers will be at the iHub that afternoon and will seek to engage with present member on one on one session.

On the same afternoon, our guests will also cover a special topic on Computer Software and Copyright. Dr. Isaac Rutenberg who will be our in-residence lawyer for the month of August will cover this topic. He is a Patent Agent for the intellectual property law firm

of Bozicevic, Field & Francis, LLP. As a Patent Agent, he helps companies, universities, and research institutes worldwide obtain and maintain intellectual property (IP) portfolios. Although based in California, he regularly travels to Kenya and remains active in IP matters relevant to Kenya.

Jean-Baptiste Blanc will be present as well to help answer questions from the members. His practice covers both the intellectual and industrial property rights: copyright, software, database, domain name, trademark, trade secret, knowhow, patent, industrial designs, registered designation of origin - Mostly in an advisory setting.

We will also have Wathingira Gitua present to help address issues on Business Associations. He is a young law graduate from the University of Nairobi and his area of interest encompasses the broad spectrum of Corporate & Commercial law. Wathingira recently moved to the law-firm Coulson Harney, Advocates where he is currently engaged as a pupil. He is currently enrolled at the Kenya School of Law where he is pursuing a post-graduate diploma in law with the aim of joining the bar."

To close the afternoon, Marisella will give a talk on Copyright and an overview of KECOBO. The lawyers will try to tackle issues on Copyright protection, requirements for a Copyright, what is and is not copyrightable, enforcement and duration of copyright and finally collective rights societies.
