Learning agility, or the ability to learn and adapt in changing contexts (Mitchinson & Morris, 2012), is central to success in the workplace and life in general. A recent study by the Korn/Ferry Institute identified learning agility as the top ranking predictor of leadership success, while estimating that only 15% of the workforce is “highly learning agile” (De Meuse, Dai, & Hallenbeck, 2010). In addition, learning agility is also a component of organizational agility, which is proving to return significant bottom line benefits for those who make it a strategic priority (Glenn, 2009).
In this two-day Institute module led by Pamela Meyer, Ph.D. with Catherine Marienau, Ph.D., participants will discover the dimensions and dynamics of learning agility; they also will learn and develop strategies to help learners in their practice setting develop the competence, capacity and confidence for learning agility.
Note: The Institute sessions are from 9AM-4PM, with a one hour lunch break each day.
— Understand key dynamics and dimensions of learning agility
— Learn and develop strategies to enhance your own and others’ learning agility in your practice setting
— Discover how to connect learning agility to individual and organizational success
Multi-modal strategies will be used throughout the Institute, including:
— Participatory presentations integrating lecture and interaction
— Large and small group discussion and reflection
— Learning agility demonstrations (both facilitator and participant led)
— Experiential learning activities
— Graphic facilitation
Participants will receive:
— Materials packet with readings and Institute handouts
— Access to the dedicated online group site for additional resources and continued dialogue with Institute participants and the facilitator
— A copy of Pamela Meyer’s book, From Workplace to Playspace: Innovating, Learning and Changing Through Dynamic Engagement (Jossey-Bass, 2010)
— A follow-up session 3-4 weeks after the Institute to discuss learning application in your practice setting.
Who Should Attend
- Higher education faculty, academic advisors and other student service providers who are interested in integrating learning agility approaches into their work with adult learners.
- Workplace learning professionals (human resource, training and development, and others) who want to make learning agility a strategic priority in their organizations. Institute credits may be able to be applied toward your professional certifications.
- Graduate students and others who are building their skills and knowledge for working with adult learners in any setting.
- HR Professionals: This program, 201555, has been approved for 11 (HR (General)) recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute.
- ASTD Members: CPLPs can earn recertification credits by participating in continuing education activities that meet the ASTD Certification Institute Recertification Guidelines. Please review the CPLP Recertification Guidelines on the CPLP website, www.cplp.astd.org, for more information.
- DePaul School for New Learning Students: You may be able to include this module as part of an independent learning project. Consult your faculty mentor for approval.
About the Facilitators
Pamela Meyer, Ph.D. is the Director of the Center to Advance Education for Adults, housed at DePaul University’s School for New Learning (SNL). In addition to her role as Director, Pamela teaches courses in organizational agility and innovation in SNL’s graduate programs overall, and adult learning theory in SNL’s Master of Arts in Educating Adults (MAEA) program. She is also President of Meyer Creativity Associates where she works with organizations that want to be more innovative and agile. Pamela is the author of three books on innovation, learning and change, including From Workspace to Playspace: Innovating, Learning and Changing Through Dynamic Engagement (Jossey-Bass, 2010).
Catherine Marienau, Ph.D. is professor and faculty mentor in the School for New Learning at DePaul University in Chicago. She teaches, writes, and consults in the areas of adult learning and development, experiential learning, outcomes-based curriculum and assessment, self-assessment, and women's development. Dr. Marienau is also a founding member of the leadership team for DePaul’s Center to Advance Education for Adults and has co-authored several books and articles on adult learning, including Developing Adult Learners: Strategies for Teachers and Trainers (Jossey-Bass, 2000)
