Kiki Smith artwork

Jung has said that there is a feminine quality to creative work, as it arises from the unconscious depths - the matrix of life where instinct and archetype intermingle. This paper will inquire into the nature of creative process through the particular lens of the artwork and creative trajectory of Kiki Smith, one of the most intuitive and influential artists of her generation. Smith’s work draws spirit into a bodily feminine narrative on a number of levels – through materials, method, style and content. Her intensive process transfigures this convergence of spirit and body into an extraordinary array of symbolic forms, exemplifying a singularly feminine mode of creation.

Diane Fremont, LCSW, is a Jungian Analyst in private practice in New York City, and a supervisor and faculty member of the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association. She is also a board member of ARAS, the Archive for Research in Archetypal Symbolism, and a contributor to their publication, The Book of Symbols. She writes and lectures on dreams, alchemy, imagination, art and the creative process and presented “The Visible and the Invisible in Art: the Secret Space of the Image” at the first Art & Psyche conference in 2008.
