Nestled in 50-acres of lovely woods, the Portiuncula provides a peaceful environment for meditation. There are open, grassy knolls, wooded hiking trails and a small creek, as well as a labyrinth.

Retreat Description:
Every stage of life confronts us with successes and failures, accomplishments and losses, illnesses and accidents, friends and foes, cancer, aging, senility, growing awareness of death, and insecurity. In response we celebrate, quaver, flinch, grasp, flee, narcotize, and defend. To the extent we meet such vicissitudes with selfish stances and egoistic reactivity we suffer - needlessly. Dhamma inquiry and practice develops the capacity to wisely bear under life's fluxes -- whether easy or hard. Acceptance and compassion are key to that wise, skillful endurance. Mindfulness and inner steadiness are crucial foundations for them.

This retreat will take place in noble silence and simplicity. There will be ample opportunity for sitting meditation, walking midst the Port's pleasant grounds, personal reflection, and journaling. Talks and dialogue circles will explore the themes of the retreat. The food is simple and adequate.

Retreat Teacher:
SantikaroSantikaro Upasaka trained for almost two decades as a Theravada bhikkhu, mostly at Suan Mokkh in Southern Thailand where he lived with Ajahn Buddhadasa and became his primary translator. His training continues here in the Midwest, as an upasaka, where he is co-founder of Liberation Park, a modern expression of Buddhist practice, study, and social responsibility, located in rural southwestern Wisconsin. He has been teaching in the Chicago area since his return "home" in 2000 and is active teaching around the Midwest and further afield. Life's vicissitudes have given him some acquaintance with cancer, stroke, addictions, globalization, and other challenges that he explores regularly. (Please visit www.liberationpark.org for more, especially updates on the new facilities we are building this Summer and Fall to serve retreatants such as yourself.)

Cost:
Costs include three meals a day and all expenses pertaining to your stay at the Port. All meals will be vegetarian. If you have any dietary restrictions please contact the retreat manager at registrar@insightchicago.org before the retreat.

The cost per person for the retreat is as follows:

Single room resident: $340
Double room resident: $280 per person

Scholarship Deposit: $100 (quantities limited)

Dana:
The teachings are offered freely but there will be an opportunity to make a donation (dana) to the teacher at the end of the retreat. We also give dana to the kitchen help so an offering should be considered for them as well.
