Event Details

It’s 2014 and we have health insurance! But we all know this alone isn’t going to fix our healthcare system. So what can we do to take the next bold step in creating a healthy environment for ourselves and the people we live, work and breathe next to?

LA2050 and CenterScene, a program of The California Endowment, invite you to the first of our Innovators in Health Salon series. Our first salon will feature three non-traditional service models, which are improving the health of their communities.

On the fence about attending? This event is for any and everyone who is excited to learn about health innovators in their community. In addition, there will be ample time for networking and will serve as an opportunity for those interested in improving health in Los Angeles to connect!

Robert Egger, Founder and President, L.A. Kitchen
Amita Swadhin, Los Angeles Executive Director, Peer Health Exchange
Melinda Cordero, Associate Director, Visión y Compromiso

 moderated by:
Annalisa Robles, Program Manager, The California Endowment

Robert Egger is the Founder and President of L.A. Kitchen, which will open in late 2014, following a series of pilot programs this Spring and Summer. The L.A. Kitchen will partner with regional farmers and produce suppliers to purchase or recover fresh fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste, transforming them into nutritious meals that will strengthen the community. L.A. Kitchen’s culinary job training program will prepare youth aging out of foster care and older adults exiting the prison system for careers in the food service industry. The meals prepared by our staff, students, andvolunteers will be distributed to area social service agencies, concentrating on programs that support L.A.'s aging population. L.A. Kitchen exists to ensure that neither food nor people ever go to waste.

Melinda Cordero joined Visión y Compromiso in 2004 as the Director of the Promotoras and Community Health Workers Network. A native of Boyle Heights, she is a nationally certified trainer with over 20 years of experience managing and training promotores. She sits on numerous committees and boards and has been honored with several awards.

LA2050 + CenterScene

LA2050 is an initiative to create a shared vision for the future of Los Angeles, and to drive and track progress toward that vision. We achieve this through research and reporting, online and offline events, and capital development. Spearheaded by the Goldhirsh Foundation, LA2050 has looked at the health of the region along well-defined indicators, and made informed projections about where we’ll be in the year 2050 if we continue on this current path.

CenterScene is a wide-ranging series of public programs organized by the Center for Healthy Communities. These panel discussions, speaker series, film screenings, and related programs take place at the Los Angeles headquarters and allow participants to better understand the crucial health issues facing California communities and to meet and network with others interested in building the dialogue and action around better health.
