Event Details

How can organizations from diverse sectors overcome barriers and collaborate to promote a housing market recovery and revitalize communities?

The Regional Home Ownership Preservation Initiative (RHOPI) will focus on this challenge at its annual forum, Innovative Collaborations to Revitalize Communities.

RHOPI Annual Forum: Innovative Collaborations to Revitalize Communities

Ralph Metcalfe Federal Building (77 West Jackson Blvd, 3rd Floor Conference Center)

 Wednesday, October 30, 2013

10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Innovative Collaborations to Revitalize Communities will feature examples of collaborations among governments, nonprofits, universities, and businesses that help bring communities back from the devastation of the foreclosure crisis. Speakers include Alan Berube of the Brookings Institution (co-author of the recently released Confronting Suburban Poverty in America), Midwest Regional Administrator of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Antonio Riley, and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

One panel will showcase a variety of collaborative neighborhood revitalization efforts. Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson of Gary, Indiana, will discuss a vacant building collaboration between the city government, the University of Chicago, and a tech start-up. Ed Jacob, Executive Director of Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago, will present its purchase-rehab financing program, including its partnerships with private and public institutions. Hildy Kingma of the Village of Park Forest will explore how to address gaps in code enforcement capacity through interjurisdictional agreements with neighboring towns. Paula Brkich of HOPE Fair Housing Center will discuss an upcoming RFP process that will bring together members of the development community in the City of Elgin and the Austin neighborhood in Chicago to complete a rehab program in the two communities. Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gainer will describe the collaborative efforts that led to the formation of the Cook County Land Bank Authority. In a second panel, Micro Market Recovery Program partners will discuss a coordinated approach to community revitalization.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity!
