This month's topic: Small & Mid-Size Sustainable Businesses

Deborah Acosta
Featured Guest:

Deborah Acosta

Chief Innovation Officer - City of San Leandro

“Innovation usually happens through the shared collision of ideas, whether big or small.  Sharing allows connections that may otherwise lie dormant – and when dots become connected, new worlds of innovation can emerge” - Deborah Acosta

Deborah Acosta has been called a number of things during her career – dark fiber and innovation maven, commercial lending officer, and economic development professional.  She refers to herself, however, as a passionate and persistent “dot-connector”, and credits much of her ability to inspire transformational change to her creative connections.  Ms. Acosta became San Leandro’s first Chief Innovation Officer in February 2013. She is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley, with 12 years of experience as a banking professional in San Francisco, 12 years as a City of Oakland Economic Development professional focused in International Trade and the Innovative Technology sectors, and 1.5 years as an entrepreneur and business development consultant.

As the City of San Leandro’s first Chief Innovation Officer, Ms. Acosta’s task is twofold:
  1. Develop the Lit San Leandro fiber optic network as a unique infrastructure tool to attract, expand and retain innovative tech businesses and businesses in need of fast connections to the internet; and
  2. Cultivate a healthy tech and innovation ecosystem designed to attract tech companies and their employees.  As a City of 86,000 residents that historically has manufactured things, San Leandro is rapidly rising to prominence as a city evolving to a tech and innovation economy. This transition is enabled by the Lit San Leandro fiber optic network – an 11.5 mile, 100 gigabit fiber optic network created through a public/private partnership between the City and OSIsoft founder and CEO, Dr. Patrick Kennedy.
Today, San Leandro has become the subject of Deborah’s professional passion. San Leandro’s rapid transformation from a sleepy industrial city to a fully realized art, tech and innovation hub is still a work in progress.  Join us for her insights on how Berkeley and other regional communities can benefit from the lessons learned by one Bay Area City that is morphing into its future.
